Spectacular gardens around the orange-red temple buildings provide transfixing views and transport you to a leafy world of peace in the center of Chiba.

The Chiba Shrine is a Shinto temple comprised of mesmerizing orange structures in the midst of a scenic complex. Despite being right in the heart of Chiba, this serene compound is a world away from the concrete towers just across the street. Admire the bright orange glow of the temple complex’s spiritual buildings.

As you pass through the main gates, notice the carved depictions of the 12 animals of the traditional calendar. Enter the central building and climb to its second floor, which provides excellent views of the temple’s gardens. Enjoy the utter serenity in this spiritual haven that will make you forget the hubbub of the rest of the city center.

Go on a leisurely stroll along the paths that meander through the picturesque and tranquil gardens. These landscaped gardens have a distinctly Japanese style, with bright orange bridges leading across ponds filled with colorful koi. Marvel at the reds, oranges and yellows of the the changing leaves in fall.

Discuss the meaning and customs of the temple with a local guide to learn about its connection to the Myoken deity in the Shinto belief system. This bodhisattva is said to be an incarnation of the North Star and provides a shield from bad luck and bodily harm.

For a deeper sense of ongoing traditions, attend one of the festivals held here. Among the highlights is the Myoken Taisai Festival in August, when small shrines are carried through the city. Head to the adjacent city square and stay into the evening to see its impressive Chiba Central Arch with a blue glow.

Find the Chiba Shrine in the northeastern part of the city center. Arrive at the central Chiba Station and walk east for about 15 minutes to reach the temple. While you’re here, check out other nearby highlights such as the Chiba City Culture Center, Dojo Park and Torimachi Park.
