Learn about the history of war in Korea, marvel at the vast range of military hardware on display and pay your respects to the many lives lost in war.

Centrally located in Seoul, the War Memorial of Korea is a vast indoor and outdoor museum and memorial giving an insight into nearly all aspects of war in Korea.Exhibits tell about wars from 57 B.C. through to recent history.

Begin by taking in the imposing entrance to this immense museum in the former headquarters of the Korean Infantry. At the museum’s opening in 1994 it was believed to be the largest of its kind in the world. Marvel at the range of military hardware on display in the grounds of the War Memorial or head inside for a more in-depth insight.

Entering the main building you will find seven main exhibition halls all covering different themes. These range from the very moving Memorial hall, through to the interesting War History hall and the horror of the Korean War hall. Browse the items, artifacts and documents on display to get the full picture. The fact that the South Korean peninsula is technically still at war with North Korea, makes a visit to this museum all the more topical and impressive.

Marvel at the range of items on display in the Large Military Equipment hall. This extensive range extends even farther with many large items stationed in the grounds of the memorial. Unusual items include the turtle ship replica and the “hwacha,” a 16th-century device able to fire 100 arrows at once.

View the collection of warcraft from abroad, including many planes, tanks and guns. Also don’t miss the Defending the Fatherland statue and the Two Brothers statue with its reference to South and North Korea. The detail of the Clock Tower of Peace is another highlight.

The War Memorial of Korea is open daily except most Mondays. The museums stays open until the early evening each last Wednesday of the month. Entry is free. Free guided tours are available twice daily, one mid morning and the other in the early afternoon.

Get here by taxi or take a subway to Samgakji Station and head for exit 12, from where it is just a short walk to the museum. You can also reach the museum by bus and by car.Parking fees apply.
