"This hotel building is 400 years old and a histrionic building. However, this hotel completely renovated and looks like brand new and very clean. The staff is kind and helpful. There is a bus stop to Odawara & lake in front of this hotel and it is convenient and perfect for sightseeing."

"If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese Inn stay, this was fun for a night. As Americans the entire concept was foreign to us but we looked forward to fully immersing ourselves for an evening. If you’re in the same boat as us some recommendations: Be prepared to be a little confused. The slippers are difficult to walk in so it feels silly walking up the stairs to your room however it’s a fun experience. Take it slow although the staff may not be understanding that this is your first time...

The host left a very helpful instructional booklet describing how to use all of the amenities, and even instructions on how to best prepare the food. "One of the best stays I've ever had. Very comfortable, everything was perfect. And it's a small ryokan/hotel so there are not that many other guests. Very peaceful."

"Great food, amenities, atmosphere, and service! If you have a food allergy please make sure to remind them right before the meal. They forgot I had an allergy and I ended up needing to take medicine for it. Worked out ok for me but could have been a lot more dangerous for others. Other than that everything was PERFECT though! "We had a really nice stay, the staff were extremely accomodating and helpful, despite our extremely limited Japanese! The room was clean and spacious, with many amenities provides. Beds were very comfortable, and we slept really well. We'd recommend this hotel for anyone after a more traditional experience"

"My husband, daughter and I spent our last night in Japan at this property. At the time of booking, rooms with a private onsen were sold out. We missed out on the experience but we stayed at the Annex (a little outdated but Ok). Check in and check out were a breeze. Very polite clerks. I liked their gift shop, complimentary coffee and treats in the lobby. Overall, I would recommend it. "

"They lost our reservation and made us sit in the lobby for half an hour while waiting to figure out if we had a place to stay or not. It was too late to order dinner there--you have to book in advance. The room was nice, and the hot spring-fed bath on the patio was lovely, though it might not work for two tall people at the same time. "

"Large space in Hakone and very reasonably priced. Good for large groups of fit, young people. Recommended parking is up a very steep hill and stairs to second floor are a little narrow and steep. The house was otherwise clean and comfortable."

An extra-special relaxing spot

"Loved the hotel! Be aware public Japanese baths mean sharing the hot springs experience with no clothing. It is separated by gender. We picked the private baths. When we wanted 3 different baths per member of the family, they suggested we only book 1 private bath and we could wear our bathing suits. It was great. There is a room with different types of massage chairs- one for whole body, another for feet, and another for feet and legs. We picked the half board meals. The first night was element with a guy who spoke English and explained each elegant course to us. It made the meal extra-special. The second night, we had a different waiter who didn’t speak English at all and only provided us a few minutes to finish each course apologizing before shoving each course on our crowded table. It didn’t feel special at all. I’m not sure what the hotel requires of their staff, so perhaps the first night we were just lucky. After eating dinner, our futon beds were taken out of the closet and were made with linens and pillows (we wondered what we would sleep on when we walked in). The town was a 10 minute walk and was so cute with tons of specialty shops and local restaurants. We took a short train trip to Lake Ashi and took a boat tour where you could hop off/on the boat at little towns. We stopped at a small town with a museum. Inside was a panoramic view of Mt Fuji which you could also see on the boat. I highly recommend this hotel and Hakone. "

"We had the most incredible stay here while visiting Hakone. The location is ideal: a 2 min walk from the main train station and right on the river. Waking up to the sound/view of the river is just magical. The team working here is incredibly nice, hospitable and accommodating. We did the half board and the food was delicious and varied. We asked for our meals to be vegetarian and we were served the most beautiful kaiseki style spread in our room. A special thank you to Yuki who took care of us during our stay and made us feel welcome and comfortable. She went above & beyond to make sure everything related to our room and meals was nothing short of incredible. Would definitely come back here again without thinking twice."

"Hygiene of this property was horrible! The property was full of insects and dirt. Bugs and spiders were everywhere - on dining table, on floor, on wall and even on the bed - literally a bug house! We were scared by a giant spider on the bed. It is beyond a normal hygiene problem but constitutes a safety concern for residents. Nevertheless, most terrifying and disappointing thing is the attitude and response of the property manager. We tried to contact the owner and asked for cleaning the dead bug bodies in the apartment. However, property manager showed an irresponsible attitude and claimed that this is ‘normal’ in Hakone (which is ridiculous, this is not my first time visiting Hakone). The property manager told us to buy insect spray from convenient store and handle the insect problem by ourselves. What an irresponsible response! The property locates beside a BBQ restaurant which operates till midnight, so please expect a strong oily smell. The location is close to railway. You will hear the noise from the train inside the property. I strongly recommend Expedia to remove this property from its platform and ban this property management company permanently in order to safeguard the reputation of Expedia and benefit of customers."
