Spots of color decorate this peaceful garden just outside central Portland. Come throughout the year for varying delights of flowers and trees.

Large colorful blossoms in spring are just the beginning of the appeal of the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Include a stop here for several hours whatever time of year you visit Portland.

During the garden’s peak season from April to May, see 2,500 gorgeous pink and lavender rhododendrons and azaleas in shades of white, yellow orange, pink and red. The oldest rhododendron in the garden was planted more than a century ago. Bushes stand in naturalized settings in the 9.5-acre (4-hectare) park along paths, next to a lake and waterfalls and near pretty bridges.

Join visitors on the first Saturday in April for the Early Show and Plant Sale when specimens of rhododendrons and azaleas are shown and judged. Come during Mother’s Day weekend when most of the showy blossoms are at their best. You can enter your own flowers in a show judged by the Portland Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and purchase plants and books.

Arrive throughout the year to enjoy quiet walks on winding paths. Look for ducks paddling in the spring-fed lake. More than 90 bird species have been sighted in the garden, including herons, coots and eagles. A weeping willow near a picturesque arched bridge is a summertime favorite. In autumn, falling leaves from shrubs and trees add different colors to the setting. The garden is a perfect place to enjoy a rare Portland snowfall.

Given its natural beauty, the garden is the perfect setting for memorable photography. Bring small groups for family portraits, engagement photos, gender reveal celebrations and other commemorations. Schedule photo sessions in advance. If you’re planning a wedding, reserve a date for an open-air event in this lovely setting.

Admission to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is free from October through February and on any Monday. There is a fee during business hours from March through September.

The garden is open from dawn to dusk. Find it in southeastern Portland near Crystal Springs Lake, Eastmoreland Golf Course, Reed College and Westmoreland Park Nature Playground. Drive and park in the free lot or take a bus to a stop one block away.
