Get a rare and fascinating look through the history and behind the scenes of the hand-operated characters we know and love.

The Center for Puppetry Arts is a complex dedicated to the skill, techniques and history of puppets. It uses workshops, collections and temporary exhibits to take visitors through the elements of the physical performance and the artistry behind it. Bring your whole family to enjoy the colors, sights and sounds of this nostalgic hub.

Attend live puppet performances in the museum, ranging from children’s shows to adult-themed spectacles. Recognize the tributes to your childhood heroes in the Family Series, which has all types of characters aimed at kids. Adults may prefer the dark humor of the Ghastly Dreadfuls, among other funny puppets in the New Directions section.

Make your way through the Jim Henson Collection Gallery for the puppets portraying the iconic characters of Sesame Street and The Muppets. This section showcases an eclectic range of props and costumes from the shows. Learn more about Henson and his colleagues as well as other themes in the temporary displays of the Dean DuBose Smith Special Exhibits Gallery.

For a sense of the wider context behind puppets, inspect the Global Collection Gallery. It looks at the history of these hand-operated figures around the world. Browse the toys lining the shelves of the museum store.

The Center for Puppetry Arts has been operating since 1978. It opens Tuesday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon and runs from noon on Sundays. There is a fee for adult tickets toddlers enter for free.

Located between the districts of Ansley Park and Atlantic Station, the Center for Puppetry Arts is in Midtown Atlanta. Travel on the Red or Gold line of the metro to the Arts Center Transit station and walk north for roughly 10 minutes to get here.

While in the area, stop at the nearby sights of Bodies the Exhibition, the High Museum of Art and the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum.
