The USS Midway was once the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the US Navy, in operation from 1945 all the way up until the early 1990s. And since its reincarnation as a museum in 2004, the 296-metre craft has housed an extraordinary military history museum. Nowadays it attracts over 800,000 visitors every year, who come to see its remarkable exhibits.
The attraction’s highlights include over 20 restored aircraft which will take you on a journey through the history of aerial warfare. You’ll also be able to get into the cockpit of some planes and see what it’s really like inside.
Take a turn on some of the amazing flight simulators which will give you a taste of how it feels to be in control of a fighter plane. Making the experience even more exciting and realistic are the genuine recordings you’ll hear of old military missions. Bear in mind you’ll have to pay extra to try the simulators.
The museum also will give you a fascinating insight into daily life on board the ship. You will get to see the sleeping quarters, post office, not to mention the jail, and imagine what life was like for the people who once came aboard and spent months on end here.
As you make your way around the vessel, you’ll be able to find out so much more about the exhibits thanks to the self-guided audio tour for adults and children, included in the admission charge. You’ll even get to hear people who served on the carrier narrating the tour.
The Aircraft Carrier Museum is open every day except at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It takes three or four hours to truly explore and appreciate what’s on display. You’ll also be able to get on board the deck of the ship for free and enjoy the captivating view of San Diego the spot affords.
