Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre

One of the world’s largest pipe organs and a range of auditoriums make this theater complex’s interior as impressive as its futuristic frontage.

With its pointed glass façade and eclectic program, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre stands out as an architectural gem and a hub of performing arts. It is one of Toshima’s principal entertainment venues for music recitals, operatic performances and dance shows. Choose between the Concert Hall, the Playhouse, the Theatre East and the Theatre West for a show you want to attend.

Listen to one of the classical music recitals by the Tokyo Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. The site is also known for its Theatre Opera style of program, blending opera with theatrical staging. The main Concert Hall is the largest auditorium, with 1,999 seats, while the 200-seat Theatre West provides a cozier ambiance.

Study the schedule for the theater’s great range of shows, from well-known international productions to original scripts and performances. You’ll also be able to see modern versions of classical arrangements as well as shows with an abstract interpretation of conventional pieces.

Make your way through the exhibition spaces and check out the various traveling exhibits here. You can also use the meeting rooms and take a look at the rehearsal studios. Check the schedule for workshops and lectures taking place in these artistic surroundings.

Dine with your family in the restaurant or leave your kids in the childcare section during a performance. The theater was inaugurated in 1990, before developing into one of the cultural cornerstones of northern Tokyo. Major renovations in 2012 brought it to today’s exquisite appearance and functionality.

Get tickets from the theater box office in the window of the first floor. It opens daily from morning to evening.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre is on the western side of the Ikebukuro railway station in the center of Toshima. Drive northwest from the center of Tokyo for about 10 minutes to get here. Once in the area, see other nearby attractions such as the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center, the Owl and Owlets Sculpture and Rikkyo University.
