Rikkyo University

Founded by an American missionary, this historic university has traditional Western architecture and charming gardens that make a nice surprise in central Tokyo.

Dating back to the 19th century, Rikkyo University is a cornerstone of liberal arts and a hub for international students in Tokyo. Its campus is scenic and tranquil, with historic buildings and leafy gardens. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the tree-lined paths of the campus and notice the Western design of the redbrick structures covered by climbing ivy.

Marvel at the impressive façade of the main building, which was constructed in 1918. Look around the All Saints’ Chapel and listen to the melodic music of the choir and pipe organ. Admire the wooden panels that make up an elegant interior. The university is steeped in tradition and religion, being affiliated with the Anglican Church.

Take a break for lunch and have a bowl of curry rice alongside students in the main dining hall. While you eat your humble fare, look up at the Baroque ceiling. Chat with locals about student customs and prospects in this academic hub. Enjoy the utter serenity in the leafy surroundings of the campus, which takes you away from the busy streets and concrete layout of the Toshima district of Tokyo.

Learn about the history of the university and its campus in the Heritage and Future of Rikkyo Museum in the Rikkyo Gakuin Exhibition Hall. Its exhibits provide insights into the development and next stages of this educational institute. See how it began as a small private school in 1874.

Note that the campus is open at all times to visitors. You are welcome to take a look around the buildings for free.

Take a train to the Ikebukuro railway station and walk west for a few minutes to get to Rikkyo University. It is a little north of Tokyo’s city center and is also near the Kanamecho and Shiinamachi stations. Explore the area for other treasures such as Nishi-Ikebukuro Park, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center.
