Tivoli Gardens

This historic amusement park is where the famously cool Danes come to let their hair down.

Tivoli opened its gates in 1843, according it the status of one of the oldest pleasure gardens in the world. Over the years it has become a much-loved Copenhagen institution, welcoming over four million visitors every year.

The basic entertainment concept behind Tivoli has changed little since its early days, when it consisted of exotic buildings, bandstands, restaurants, beautiful gardens and mechanical rides, including a merry-go-round and scenic railway. After dark, the gardens were illuminated by coloured lanterns and firework displays were held over the lake.

Nowadays many of the original rides have been replaced by high-tech alternatives, but the charm factor remains untouched by time. Take a historic trip on the wooden, manually controlled Mountain Coaster dating from 1914 or experience the white-knuckle thrills of the Star Flyer, the world’s tallest carousel, which opened in 2006. There are plenty of fun rides for every member of the family.

Come back down to earth with a walk through the beautiful landscaped gardens of the 8.5-hectare site, perhaps stopping off at the lake to take a gentle cruise in one of the gaily painted dragon boats or pausing to admire the historic Chinese Tower. Watch a performance of traditional pantomime in the open-air theatre or check out the programme of live music at the Tivoli Concert Hall.

Tivoli is also famous for its restaurants, and some of the best food in Copenhagen is served up beneath the twinkling lights of the evening illuminations. Take your time to choose where and what to eat, with options ranging from international family favourites to fine dining Scandinavian style.

Tivoli Gardens is situated right next to the central station, providing many rail travellers with an unforgettable first sight of the city framed through the struts of a historic rollercoaster. The gardens are open every day from April to September and for limited periods during the rest of the year, including the Christmas season and special festivals. Check the website for opening times and admission charges.
