Swinging Bridge Picnic Area

Amid the grandeur of the majestic peaks of Yosemite National Park, this quiet spot along the river offers a peaceful location to relax and have a meal.

Make the Swinging Bridge Picnic Area a frequent stop on your visit to Yosemite National Park, which is filled with natural wonders. Not only is this site next to the river a wonderful setting to have an outdoor meal, but simply walking through this part of the valley is unforgettable. Walk alongside the Merced River to see stunning reflections of overhanging rock formations and view majestic Yosemite Falls.

Swinging Bridge is one of the major attractions in the park for its photo-worthiness. It’s a popular place for sunbathing, rafting and swimming. From this structure is a memorable view of Upper Yosemite Falls.

Watch visitors on rafts floating peacefully downstream or join swimmers in the popular bathing area next to the bridge. Sentinel Beach is the next important area a short distance downstream on the Merced River where rafters end their trip before walking upstream to repeat the experience.

A user-friendly trail emphasizing accessibility connects Swinging Bridge to the picnic area and parking lot. Find a picnic table and use one of the provided grills to cook a meal so you can prolong your time within this magnificent setting. The area does not have vendors so it’s important to remember to bring water along with your food.

Foot power, either walking or cycling, provides the best way to see the park. The picnic area is located on a bike trail that goes in a loop in this part of the valley.

Find Swinging Bridge Picnic Area on Southside Drive approaching Yosemite Village and just after Sentinel Beach.

Swinging Bridge got its name from a structure that preceded it, but today it doesn’t swing. If you’re determined to satisfy your adventurous spirit, try a bona fide swinging bridge in the southern portion of the park. Hike to the Wawona Swinging Bridge, which is not as accessible nor as picturesque, but it does sway, offering a suitably thrilling or scary ride.
