In the capital of Spanish Basque’s Gipuzkoa Province, this small island is famous, decorating one of the loveliest bays in Europe.

The Isla de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Island, or Santa Klara uhartea in Basque language) is a lovely little island in San Sebastián in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Visit for its charming lighthouse, port, sandy beach, lovely chiringuito (small beach bar) and spectacular views.

The island has a fantastic location in the heart of the beautiful Bahía de la Concha (Concha Bay) and between the well-known mountains Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo. Discover a very popular and family-friendly spot, where tourists and locals swim, go for long walks surrounded by outstanding views and enjoy a cool drink on the sunny terrace of a bar.

Seeing the appearance of the Isla de Santa Clara today makes it hard to imagine its somewhat checkered past. During the 16th century it was used as a quarantine area for those suffering from the plague. Now this gorgeous and green island is one of the most popular attractions in the city.

Despite being a small island, Santa Clara has much to see and do. Swim in the clear waters of its lovely cala (small bay or cove). This beach can be enjoyed only during low tide, as it is almost completely flooded during high tide. Enjoy stunning views of the bay. The very lively and safe beach has lifeguard patrols during the summer months. Look for its charming white lighthouse and enjoy delicious paella (Spanish dish usually made from rice, shellfish and vegetables) sitting on the quiet terrace of the chiringuito.

During your visit to Santa Clara, take long strolls around the island. You’ll pass numerous picturesque spots along the way, with picnic tables and benches where you can sit and rest while enjoying the panoramic views of the city of San Sebastián, the sea and the mountains.

Reach the Isla de Santa Clara by boat. Select a quick ferry or a guided tour along the entire coast of the city.
