The Monte Igueldo (Igueldo Mountain) or Igeldo, Txubillo o Hiru Txubilloak in Basque language, is a very famous spot west of the city of San Sebastián. Ride to the top of the hill on the old-fashioned Funicular de Igueldo (Igueldo funicular railway) to marvel at some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the bay Bahía de la Concha and discover a classic fun park.
The most popular way to reach the top of Igueldo Mountain is the famous funicular. This picturesque transport with wooden carriages has been active since the year 1912 and is one of the oldest of its kind in San Sebastián and the Basque Country. The route begins at the beach Playa Ondarreta and climbs all the way to the renowned Parque de Atracciones Monte Igueldo (Monte Igueldo Amusement Park). Discover stunning views of the bay while you travel on the funicular and take great coastal panorama shots.
The amusement park has traditional age-old attractions. Have fun on the roller coaster and the Casa del Terror (House of Horrors). Go for a ride on the little boats of the Río Misterioso (Mystery River) and enjoy beautiful vistas. Discover the 1930 labyrinth, full of long hallways and twisting turns, until you reach the great slide at the end.
While you are at Monte Igueldo, visit the old-fashioned lighthouse El Torreón. During the 16th century, this area was used to provide a light signal to help ships sail through the dangerous entry of the port. In 1854, when a new lighthouse was built nearby, the original building was abandoned. In 1912 it was finally rehabilitated by the architect Luís Elizalde. See the fantastic exhibit at El Torreón to learn about the traditional lifestyle and customs of the area. Find its terrace and enjoy amazing views.
