Melbourne Aquarium which includes interior views and marine life

Find out more about what goes on beneath the waves in one of Australia’s most impressive marine attractions.

From dapper penguins to fearsome sharks, graceful seahorses to colourful tropical fish, everyone loves a visit to the aquarium. But what makes Melbourne Aquarium stand out from the crowd is its exclusive concentration on the marine life of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

The aquarium is divided into four main areas, so it’s easy to plan your visit. Watch the strikingly marked king and gentoo penguins as they swoop and dive through the chilly waters of Antarctica and learn more about the hardy fish species that live in its below-freezing temperatures. Check the timetable for feeding sessions to enjoy one of the marine world’s most entertaining spectacles, or experience a fish-eye view of soaring seabirds from the underwater viewing area.

The largest collection of seahorses and sea dragons in the world is housed in Seahorse Pier. Look carefully amongst the underwater plants to catch a glimpse of these delicate, graceful creatures as they dance in and out of the gently waving undergrowth.

Note how the marine life changes from the icy Antarctic to the warmer waters of the Southern Ocean in the Coral Atoll section, where brightly coloured tropical fish weave mesmerising patterns against a backdrop of ancient coral reef.

One of the aquarium’s most popular attractions is the giant Oceanarium, where you can get up close with sharks, rays and turtles as they circumnavigate the 2.2-million litre tank. Watch from the observation deck or, for an additional cost, set your pulse racing with an exhilarating shark dive. The aquarium’s pioneering grey nurse shark breeding programme is helping to ensure the species continues to thrive in the Southern Hemisphere.

Melbourne Aquarium is located on the north bank of the Yarra River in central Melbourne, a short walk from Flinders Street Station. Alternatively, the free City Circle tram stops right outside. It is open every day of the year including public holidays, and there is an entry charge. Check out the museum’s range of special experience packages, such as the Ocean Rangers, which offers all-day activities for children along with a chance to meet some of the aquarium’s specialist staff.
