Escape to a creative enclave at the Paseo Arts District. Comprised of a two-block street of stunning stucco buildings, the Paseo Arts District forms a unique hub for arts in the city. Drop in at artists’ studios, admire contemporary art collections or pick up a special keepsake from the district’s boutiques. On top of its flair for the visual and performing arts, the Paseo Arts District also has a knack for gastronomy. Check out cafés and restaurants serving trendy dishes and local fare.
The district was developed in the 1920s alongside Oklahoma City’s first studio and art gallery, the Elms. Eclectic artists came to stay in the 1960s and the Paseo Arts District has become a one-stop destination for creative pursuits. Stroll along the strip and find more than 20 galleries and 80 artists’ studios, which are housed in pretty Spanish-revival buildings with original stuccowork and clay-tiled roofs.
Some creative studios are open to visitors, while others hold a program of workshops, tours and special events. Check out the selection of changing art exhibitions, which feature the work of local, regional and interstate artists.
If you are feeling creative, sign up for a specialty art class. There are short courses in jewelry, painting and wire arts. Try pottery, stained-glass art or needlepoint and make a unique souvenir to bring home. The district is also renowned for its performing arts. Watch a local production or dance recital at one of the Paseo Arts District venues.
Select from the district’s range of cafés and restaurants. Varied cafés serve quick meals and refreshments, while restaurants present exciting dining experiences.
Visit on Memorial Day weekend to experience the Paseo Arts Festival or on the first weekend of the month to join the First Friday Gallery Walk.
The Paseo Arts District is located in the Paseo neighborhood north of downtown Oklahoma City. It is a 10-minute drive or a half-hour bus ride from the city center. Park on one of the adjacent streets and spend the day exploring the district on foot.
