Opera

Among the largest and most iconic theaters in Europe, this three-part complex presents a packed schedule of ballet, opera and theater.

Stuttgart Opera is a historic theater with a full and varied lineup of shows year round. Facing the Oberer Schlossgarten park, the vast complex is made up of three separate sections for ballet, opera and plays. Bring your camera to take photos of the roundhouse façade, with its imposing columns and arched windows.

Attend a symphony recital with the Staatsorchester Stuttgart. Introduce your kids to the art form at one of the Young Opera events in the Kammertheater (Chamber Theater). It has a capacity of just 200, generating an intimate feel. These performances use innovative forms and instruments to tell stories that adults and children can relate to.

Lining the roof of the neoclassical frontage are elegant statuettes of classical figures draped in tunics. Head to the terrace that wraps around the face of the theater and enjoy the views of the park and the pond beneath you. Explore the park and enjoy a picnic on the grass on a sunny day.

Note that the opera house dates back to 1909 and was the only part of the theatrical compound to survive World War II. The 1,404-seat auditorium played a major role in Stuttgart’s theatrical history, having presented the German premiere of Handel’s Rodelinda as well as debuts for other important works. Recordings of important classical albums also take place in the complex.

Book tickets for performances online or by phone. You can find the number on the theater’s official website. Go to the box office to buy tickets within an hour of a performance. Ticket prices vary depending on the type of show.

Find the Stuttgart Opera in the Stuttgart-Mitte district in the center of the city. The nearest metro stop is the Staatsgalerie. While here, see the Schlossplatz square, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Artani art gallery, among other attractions.
