New Castle (Neues Schloss) is an arresting one-time royal residence that dominates the center of Stuttgart. Duke Carl Eugen of Wüttermberg commissioned the palace with the desire to create a residence suitable for the dignity of the Dukes of Wüttermberg. The palace is an enormous three-sided building, which stands in a vast courtyard. Its pompous Baroque design is often compared to French palaces built in the 1600s. At the entrance to the courtyard are mounted sculptures of a lion and stag, two symbols from the Baden-Wüttemberg coat of arms. Note the rows of carved figures that stand atop the balustrade of the façade.
Inside, the palace boasts an array of resplendent rooms decorated with antique furniture, chandeliers and grand staircases. As you explore the rooms, imagine the lavish lifestyle of the Dukes of Wüttermberg. The rooms open to the public on guided tours and during limited hours only.
In front of the palace is Schlossplatz, a public square made up of lawns and wide pathways. Rising up from the square’s center is a victory column called the Statue of Concordia. Sit on a bench or lay down on the lawns to watch the world go by and appreciate the surrounding architectural landscape. Schlossplatz hosts year-round events, which range from open-air summer concerts to a Christmas market.
To the north of the palace is Schlossgarten, a sprawling park set around a lake. It marks the southern edge of Das Grüne U (The Green U), a U-shaped collection of parks home to beer gardens, biking routes, a zoo and botanical garden.
Located in the urban heart of Stuttgart, New Castle is easy to reach by foot and public transportation. Both the Charlottenplatz and Schlossplatz metro stations are less than a 5-minute walk away.
