It is hard to imagine a more wonderful setting for seeing a performance than this glorious building that is often said to be the largest three-section theater in the world.

See a play, ballet or opera in the beautiful Staatstheater Stuttgart. The impressive historic building that makes up the main body of the theater is beautiful inside and out. In this part of the Staatstheater ballets and opera are staged. Meanwhile, the smaller mid 20th-century playhouse building is the place to see a brilliant selection of stage shows, from dramas to comedies to musicals.

The grand Große Haus, or Big House, is sometimes also known as the Opera House. This was completed in 1912, designed by Max Littman, an architect who was given a contract to build new theaters after winning a competition. The neoclassical style Kleines Haus, or Small House, which accompanied this building was totally destroyed during World War II. Visit today and you will find a 1960s building in its place. Although this newer Small House may not be as opulent as the original, it’s still a wonderful playhouse with fantastic modern facilities.

Book tickets well in advance for any show you want to see at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. The opera, ballet and theater companies that it is home to are all highly acclaimed, and seats at their performances sell out quickly. Oper Stuttgart, Stuttgart Ballet and Schauspiel Stuttgart all have reputations that extend far beyond the town.

Make sure you dress up when you come, especially if you are attending an opera or ballet in the main building. The interior is incredibly grand, with its crystal chandeliers and its marble pillars. A visit to this space is the ideal excuse for putting on your best clothes.

Find the Staatstheater Stuttgart to the northeast of the town center. It lies at the edge of the pretty Oberer Schlossgarten park, a lovely place to go for an early evening stroll before heading inside to see a show. Check what is on at the theater well in advance of your trip to Stuttgart, as the program is always changing and tickets are in high demand.
