Take a trip to Mount Majura Vineyard to sample locally produced wines and see the vineyards that they came from. This popular vineyard has been going from strength to strength since it opened in 1988. It has won the Canberra Capital Region Tourism Awards for Tourism Wineries, Distilleries, and Boutique Breweries three times, most recently in 2010. The latest addition to the complex was a cellar door facility which opened in 2006. Today, this is where you will get a taste of some of the vineyard’s specialties. Sip tempranillo, riesling, pinot gris, shiraz, graciano, touriga and more, all produced from grapes grown right here on Mount Majura.
Nibble on cheese and antipasti platters composed of local produce during your tasting session. Cellar door staff will be on hand to guide you through the tasting process and to answer any questions you might have.
Make the most of Canberra’s great climate by getting outdoors and exploring the vineyard itself. Head out on a “gumboot tour,” a self-guided trail that will lead you through the key areas of the vineyard. As you go, take photos of this beautiful green setting which changes to brilliant red and gold foliage in fall.
Be sure to check if there are any events happening at the vineyard before you visit. The glorious scenery and great outdoor and indoor facilities make it a favorite venue for a wide range of activities and events such as the Truffle Festival and Canberra Wine Week, both held annually.
One of the things that makes a visit to Mount Majura Vineyard so appealing is that it is so easy to get to. Reach it from central Canberra in around 15 minutes by car or taxi. If you have a designated driver, try not to let on just how good the wine they are missing out on is.
