The diving off this picturesque atoll is some of the best in Hawaii, so book a guided trip for the marine adventure of your life.

The Molokini Island Preserve was set up to safeguard the fragile ecosystem of this partially submerged volcanic crater, a crescent-shaped atoll off the south-western coast of Maui surrounded by turquoise sea. It is not possible to set foot on the island itself, so the only way to appreciate its breathtaking natural beauty is to book a boat tour. These leave daily from the harbour at Maalaea, Makena, Lahaina and Kihei, so it’s easy to find a schedule and itinerary that fits in with your plans.Legend has it that ethnic Hawaiians used to paddle to Molokini to fish and gather seabirds’ eggs. This 7.2-hectare atoll is now a protected seabird sanctuary, while its waters are home to over 250 different species of marine creature. The sheltered pools formed by the steep, curving sides of the atoll create perfect conditions for diving. Expect to see many fascinating creatures swimming through the coral, including parrotfish, yellow tang, reef sharks and butterfly fish. The protective reef makes a safe, secure environment for a wide variety of marine life, and your dive leader will guide you to the best viewing spots. If the full-on scuba experience is not for you, consider booking a trip in a glass-bottomed boat instead. These tours bring you directly over the reef for a bird’s-eye view of the colourful world below. You might also get a glimpse of some of the local seabirds, including wedge-tailed shearwaters and Bulwer’s petrels, so don’t forget your binoculars and camera.Humpback whales can be spotted in the vicinity of Molokini from late December to early May. These huge mammals, which Hawaiians call “kohola”, are at their most impressive when seen from underwater. The males’ “song” can be heard echoing spookily through the depths while you hover as close as you dare so as not to disturb these gentle giants.Molokini is around 4.8 kilometres off the coast of Maui. Catamarans, rafts and yachts are allowed to moor just off the atoll for diving and sightseeing, but landing on the island is forbidden. Leave early in the morning to avoid the winds that can make the sea unpleasantly choppy.
