Kaanapali Beach is a spectacular 5-kilometre stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear water. You’ll feel like royalty in this luxurious paradise setting, whose shores were once treaded on by Hawaiian kings and queens. This renowned beach was the first planned resort in Hawaii and has since become a model for resorts around the globe. Lie back and listen to the sounds of the Pacific Ocean gently lapping against the shore of this tropical oasis.
While the sun, sea and sand are the main draws to Kaanapali, there’s also plenty to do for those seeking some adventure. Go snorkelling and marvel at the exotic marine life that can be seen splashing about under the sea. Or for something a little more daring, why not get your pulses racing and give scuba diving or parasailing a try? Golfing aficionados won’t be disappointed as Kaanapali is home to two championship golf courses, Royal Kaanapali and Kaanapali Kai. Or if sport isn’t really your thing, spend the afternoon drinking in the culture and heritage of this magical spot by embarking upon the Kaanapali Historical Trail and Legend’s Tour. This self-guided walking tour starts at the northern end of Kaanapali and covers 10 sites of cultural significance, each signposted with a lava monument and plaque. It’s well worth setting some time aside to take the tour and explore the rich history and legends of Kaanapali’s past.
Shop ‘til you drop in Whalers Village, a first-class, open-air shopping complex with countless boutiques, shops and restaurants. Treat yourself to some authentic Hawaiian crafts or grab a bite to eat in the international food court. History buffs should make a beeline for the Whalers Village Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of whaling memorabilia, so step inside and catch of glimpse of the wild days of Maui’s whaling expeditions.
No trip to Kaanapali would be complete without experiencing the cliff-diving ceremony, a nightly ritual which honours the area’s history and tradition. Every evening at sunset, tiki torches are lit along the shore as a cliff diver re-enacts the feat of Maui’s revered King Kahekili who dove from the cliff at Puu Kekaa (Black Rock), believed to be the place where spirits entered the heavenly realms, into the sea to prove his spiritual strength.
Located in West Maui, do not miss the exquisite scenery and breathtaking sunsets that await you at Kaanapali Beach.
