This beautiful old arcade houses some of the biggest names in fashion, such as Prada and Gucci, alongside traditional restaurants and hole-in-the-wall cafés.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the oldest shopping centres in the world. The grand glass-enclosed arcade today houses luxury Italian fashion labels and fine-dining restaurants. Come to admire the 19th-century architecture. Shop at the flagship stores of many of the biggest names in fashion, or sip prosecco in one of the bars. The arcade sits on the Piazza del Duomo.

There are actually two arcades in the galleria, each four storeys high and joined by a glass dome ceiling. Stand in the centre to take in the enormous size. Light floods the arcade, allowing plenty of opportunity to study and photograph its stunning marble features, painted frescoes and tiled floor. In the four mosaics that decorate the central floor of the gallery look for the coats of arms of Milan, Florence, Rome and Turin. Join the line of tourists waiting for their turn to spin on the bull that makes up Turin’s coat of arms. This popular tradition is meant to bring good luck. So many people have come to take part in the tradition that a small hole has worn into the ground.

Be prepared to splurge if you want to shop here. Prada and Gucci are among the many luxury labels that have a store in the arcade. Milan is the fashion capital of the world, and for many it’s enough just to window-shop in the home of many of the world’s most famous brands. Don’t be put off if you’re on a smaller budget, as you’re likely to find bargains during end-of-season sales. Look for up-and-coming Italian designers who sell their wares at an affordable price. As well as fashion, the galleria has art, jewellery and books.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a short walk from many downtown hotels. Alternatively, catch the metro to the Piazza del Duomo.

The centre is open every day until late, so you can enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants well into the evening.
