Fort Pitt Block House

Once part of one of the largest British forts in North America, this is the oldest surviving building in Western Pennsylvania.

With its combination of redbrick and stone designs, the Fort Pitt Block House stands out as an intriguing building in Point State Park. It is the only surviving part of the 18th-century Fort Pitt, the rest of which was demolished in 1792. On a visit to Fort Pitt Block House, go on a tour of this historic structure and imagine how it looked as part of the wider fortress.

Chat with on-site docents to learn about how the former stronghold played a key role in defending the nation during the 9-year French and Indian War of the mid 1700s. Various exhibits posted around the fort’s interior showcase artifacts dating back centuries.

Watch the digital presentations tracing the house’s history. Study the sundial from the 1760s and notice the many holes through which muskets were aimed. Spot the high water marks on the house that show the impact of devastating floods.

Make your way around the Edith Ammon Memorial Garden that surrounds the fort. While outside, notice the pointed roof and brick layout wrapping around the upper part of the building’s exterior. The lower section comprises layers of stone.

Take photos of the structure, with the mustard-yellow bridges of the Allegheny River making up a picturesque backdrop.

Find the Fort Pitt Block House in Point State Park, at the western end of the Downtown district of Pittsburgh. Travel by metro to the Gateway stop and walk west for less than 10 minutes to arrive at the attraction.

The fort is open to the public for free. Its hours run from morning to afternoon Wednesday through Sunday in summer and Friday through Sunday in winter. The structure was given a significant restoration in 2013.

While you’re in the area, stop at other neighboring sights such as Fort Duquesne, the Point State Park Fountain and Gateway Center Park.
