With soft, white sand and calm blue water, El Tecolote Beach is an idyllic stretch of the coast that appears to go on for miles. Swim, enjoy watersports, work on your tan and dine with ocean views.
Roll out your towel and relax under the shade of one of the free palapas. These are very popular, especially during the height of the summer season so unless you get to the beach early you might not find one available. Bring an umbrella just in case to provide some shade.
Your surroundings may invite long lazy hours of sunbathing but if you're a lover of watersports El Tecolote Beach won't disappoint either. Rent kayaks, Jet Skis and banana boats on the beach. For something gentler, paddle in the warm, calm water and stretch your legs with a walk along the water’s edge.
Stand on the shoreline and take in the gorgeous views of the Sea of Cortez. The vista includes the island of Espiritu Santo sitting on the horizon. This ecotourism site is an uninhabited island that’s part of the Espiritu Santo National Park. Organize a boat tour of the island with companies based in La Paz or with the beach club at El Tecolote. During the trip to and around its rugged coastline, you may see sea lions, humpback whales and many other types of marine fauna. If you go ashore, hike along the interpretive trails. Whale shark tours can also be arranged through local operators including the beach club.
Enjoy lunch and dinner at the beach’s restaurants. Try the fresh fish that has been caught in local waters. Each establishment also has sun loungers and sunshades that can be used for free by patrons.
El Tecolote Beach is located approximately 17.5 miles (28 kilometers) north of La Paz. Drive and use the free car park or travel by bus. The service departs from the tourist terminal by the La Paz boardwalk. The last return bus is late in the afternoon.
