Discover the natural beauty of the Bahamas at this cheerful center, which is touted as having the largest collection of Bahamian animals in the world.

The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre is the only zoo in the Bahamas. Set amid 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of gorgeous tropical greenery, the center is home to more than 135 animals, including a number of endangered species from the Caribbean and South America. Get a glimpse of fascinating exotic animals, such as Madagascar lemurs and boa constrictors. See the zoo’s famous marching flamingos and experience the thrill of feeding lory parrots by hand.

The zoo’s celebrated flamingo performance takes place three times throughout the day. The flamingo is the national bird of the Bahamas. This beautiful group has been trained to march in drill formation on command, complete with “about face” turns. After the performance, you’ll have the chance to walk among the flamingos and get a closer look at these unusual birds.

Don’t miss the lovely gardens, which feature a stunning display of coconut palms, bougainvillea, orchids and fruit trees. Follow winding trails through canopies of tropical trees, inhaling the enchanting smells and admiring the vivid colors. Watch for hummingbirds drawing nectar from the bright blossoms.

See diverse bird species, including Bahama parrots, macaws, peacocks and peahens in the zoo’s aviary. Check out the waterfowl in Swan Lake, which include a variety of wild ducks as well as black swans from Australia. Time your visit to be able to attend one of the zoo’s free 30-minute lectures discussing animal classification and wildlife conservation.

The lory parrot feedings are particularly popular with younger visitors. During the three daily feeding times, enter the lory exhibit and hand-feed the birds with apples.

The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre is open daily, with regular holiday closures over the Christmas season. There is an admission fee, but children under 3 years of age can enter for free. The zoo is located 2 miles (3 kilometers) west of downtown Nassau, near Delaport Bay. Reach the zoo by bus from Cable Beach or downtown Nassau.
