Tour some of the country's oldest towns and cities, relax on beaches and hike up coastal hills in the region surrounding the capital city of Portugal.

The Lisboa Region starts at the Portuguese capital of LisbonOpens in a new window before extending north along the Atlantic coastline, taking in mountain ranges, lush green vineyards, extensive beaches, ancient towns and cities. Explore centuries-old buildings and monuments, hike through the hills of a national park and unwind in beach resorts.

Start your journey in Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe, with a history that stretches back thousands of years. Explore its cobbled streets to find landmark monuments and buildings, such as old churches, palaces and the Belem Tower. This early 16th-century structure, which can still be climbed, was built as a fortress to guard the harbor entrance.

Devote some time to browsing historic artifacts and artistic treasures in museums such as the Ancient Art Museum and the Maritime Museum, which covers the city's nautical history. At night, dine in the bohemian Barrio Alto quarter and take in a concert at Coliseu dos Recreios, the Lisbon Coliseum.

Approximately 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of Lisbon is SintraOpens in a new window, a hamlet of historic buildings and gorgeous scenery amid the hills of the Serra de Sintra. Visit the Castle of the Moors and climb up to the 19th-century Pena Palace. Its exterior is a fantastical mixture of styles and colors with decorative towers, stone carvings and gargoyles.

Take a daytrip from Lisbon to Mafra, one of the oldest towns in Portugal. Tour the National Palace of Mafra, a colossal 18th-century Baroque building with more than 1,000 rooms.

The region’s beautiful countryside and favorable climate have helped it to become one of the largest wine-producing regions in the country. Embark on wine tour, stopping off at such wine-growing areas as Tomar, Alenquer and Bucelas. Nature has also blessed the region with some excellent beaches, including those of the popular summer playground of Cascais.

Lisboa Region's beaches, countryside, wines and areas of historical interest are easily accessed by car and public transport after arriving in the capital by air from most major European cities.
