Bordered by historic buildings and dotted with pretty fountains, this landscaped park is a popular relaxation spot for locals.

Zrinjevac is a popular recreation spot in the city of Zagreb. Conveniently located in the center of the Lower Town, this clean and pretty green space is dotted with centuries-old trees and fountains. Find shade from the summer sun under sprawling tree branches or visit in winter to enjoy the festive ambiance.

Before the park was built, the site was occupied by a ramshackle livestock marketplace named New Square (Novi trg). In the late 19th century, the town council of Zagreb transformed it into a landscape park space and dedicated it to the 16th-century Croatian war hero Nikola Šubić Zrinski. Though the official name of the square is Trg Nikole Šubića Zrinskog, it is more commonly known as Zrinjevac, a good nickname to use when asking for directions.

Covering an area of 135,000 square feet (12,500 square meters), this lovely park is a great place to relax. Take a break from urban exploring by strolling along its tree-lined paths. Look for its three fountains. Among them is one outstanding design by the lauded Zagreb Cathedral architect Hermann Bollé. Nicknamed the “mushroom,” it’s identifiable by its unusual shape.

As you explore, look for the meteorological column designed by Bollé in the park’s northern section. Like many of the park’s monuments, it was a gift from a wealthy local donor. The meteorological column is still functioning so check the temperature and humidity readings. Be aware that, although it works, it is not wholly accurate and may differ from official measurements.

Walk to the center of the park to see the music pavilion, which was erected in the late 19th century. It hosts regular concerts during summer. Check to see if any performances are scheduled during your visit.

One of the best times of the year to visit the park is during winter, when numerous events are held as part of the Advent in Zagreb program. Expect to see festival stalls selling handcrafted ornaments and delicious winter snacks, as well as live classical music recitals in the pavilion. To reach the park, take the tram to Zrinjevac station.
