Leave your stresses behind while soaking in the warm waters of Japan’s Yunokawa Hot Spring. Your mind will also be comforted by the serene views. Located in Hakodate on the country’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, the Yunokawa area has plenty of hot springs, giving the region a spa atmosphere. In its location near the ocean, the views from the mineral baths are tranquil. Watch fishing boats searching for their daily catches and sunbeams glistening off the waves.
Some area hotels have their own springs, but even if you’re not a guest you may be allowed entrance to the baths.
The right to indulge in this rejuvenating treatment has been shared by citizens since 1653, when a sick child of the ruling family brought here experienced a full recovery. In 1886, a more reliable source of hot water was discovered that produced a flow of 37 gallons (140 liters) per minute at a temperature over 212 F (100 C). This discovery helped to build Yunokawa’s reputation as a therapeutic destination. Stay at one of the many hotels and inns in the area.
The thermal spas have the added attraction of being in a beautiful city with easy access to its surroundings. A one-day streetcar pass entitles you to use the baths, while also providing unlimited rides to such areas as the Tropical Botanical Garden, Goryokaku Park, Hakodate Morning Market and Mount Hakodate Ropeway.
Wander around the city for its excellent shopping and delectable cuisine. Take the streetcar at the Yunokawa Onsen stop and enjoy a free thermal water footbath while waiting. Take a small towel with you to dry off. Don’t worry if you miss the next tram because more are always coming.
Reach Yunokawa Hot Spring with a short 5-minute taxi ride from Hakodate Airport or ride a tram from Hakodate Station. It isn’t just people who like the baths even monkeys get into the thermal waters at the botanical garden.
