Because of the difficulty involved in reaching it by car, the area facing Queenstown from across Lake Wakatipu remains relatively untouched. However, you can easily travel to the Walter Peak High Country Farm by climbing on board the TSS Earnslaw Steamer. The steamboat leaves Queenstown's Steamer Wharf and crosses Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak three times a day, and the traditional New Zealand farm located here is well worth the trip. The farm has been converted into accommodation for tourists and offers guests and visitors delicious barbecues using produce straight off the farm.
Walter Peak High Country Farm is still an operational sheep and cattle station, and gives visitors firsthand insight into traditional New Zealand farm life. Come and see the sheepdogs perform their invaluable and impressive duties and watch as farming techniques passed down through generations are applied in real-life situations.
Take a tour on horseback to explore more of the surrounding area and discover the beauty of the rolling hills all around the station. Knowledgeable guides will assist those without previous riding experience and will also share lots of interesting local information.
Guides are also available for mountain bike treks but it is equally possible to simply rent a bike and strike out on your own. The area is popular with experienced mountain bikers, for whom the sheer variety of tracks traversing the mountain is reason enough to make the trip.
There are a number of offers for entry to the Walter Peak High Country Farm combining the boat trip, lunch and a station tour, and the farm is open year-round.
