Cecil Peak

Abseil down canyons, play a high-altitude hole of golf or take a scenic helicopter flight at this mountain peak on Lake Wakatipu.

1,978-metres (6,489-feet) high above the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Explore Cecil Peak via hiking tracks, canyoning tours and helicopter flights. Play a breathtaking par-3 hole on the edge of the mountain to marvel at the beauty of Queenstown and Otago’s arresting mountain landscapes.

Catch a water taxi from Steamer Wharf and travel across Lake Wakatipu to Refuge Point. After leaving the water taxi, follow a trail that skirts the lake’s shoreline. Set out on the uphill hike that passes green and rocky slopes on its way to the summit of Cecil Peak. Your reward for reaching the top is uninterrupted views of Ben Lomond, Queenstown Hill and The Remarkables range.

Board a helicopter in Queenstown’s Frankton suburb and sit back as you fly up to a ledge at the top of the mountain. Watch as the Kawarau River and the rooftops of Queenstown’s town centre disappear into the distance. Disembark from the helicopter to marvel at the 360-degree panorama before flying back to Frankton.

Another exciting way to see the mountain is on a guided canyoning tour. You’ll reach the mountain via helicopter or water taxi before putting on a harness and helmet to abseil down rock walls of up to 25 metres (82 feet). Brave the heart-puming jumps into pools and ravines.

Take the opportunity to play one of the world’s most unique golf holes. This par-3 hole tees off from a height of over 1,372 metres (4,500 feet ) and must be reached via helicopter from golf clubs located close to Queenstown. Choose between four tees, the longest of which has a distance of 285 metres (935 feet) to the hole.

Tours and water taxis depart regularly for Cecil Peak from Queenstown and its suburbs. Check the return timetable if arriving by water taxi. Winter snowfall can affect the availability of activities and access to walking tracks. Remember to wear appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
