The biggest agricultural museum in Europe is housed in this stunning building.

Like many of Budapest's most beautiful and prominent structures, Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad Vára) was built as part of the Millennial Exhibition of 1896. While it is small in stature, the castle has a striking appearance from across the lake in City Park. It was built to include replicas of features from a number of significant buildings across Hungary, taking in a combination of different styles: Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance.

Take some time to appreciate the stylish marble stairs, the decorous pillars and majestic chandeliers hanging from the ceiling as you make your way around the castle.

Europe's largest agricultural museum is in Vajdahunyad Castle. Visit the History of Hungarian Agriculture from the beginning to 1945 exhibit to learn about cultures of cultivation and to observe the implements used across a wide sweep of time, from the Neolithic era all the way up to the present day. There are also a number of exhibits on display that young people can interact with. Explore the development of agricultural animals over time, along with the life of hunters, fishermen and woodsmen through the different tools they used, while admiring the pastoral artworks on the walls depicting labouring peasants.

Vineyards formed a huge part of the Hungarian economy until the end of the 19th century: here you can learn about grape growing and the winemaking trade. Examine the state's environmental initiatives in Natural Values, while Kingdom of Plants looks at the historical significance and contemporary uses of a range of flora.

Lark around in a rowboat during the summer on the lake outside, or come during winter to enjoy its transformation into an enormous ice-skating rink. Skates can be hired for all the family to enjoy a day out slipping and sliding, or maybe elegantly gliding around the lake. Don't forget to have a mulled wine when you're finished!

Vajdahunyad Castle is found in City Park. Take the subway, the bus or the tram to Heroes' Square, and then follow the signs for a walk that won't take you any more than 10 minutes.
