Visit the nearby fortress and bring your board to surf the waves of one of the three main beaches surrounding Sagres.

Enormous rock formations enclose the scenic and secluded cove of Tonel Beach. Admire the range of colors in the vegetation on the tall cliffs, which provide shelter from the strong Atlantic winds. Go surfing and get lessons from the surf schools, which choose this bay for regular instruction.

Walk down the pedestrian ramp that leads to the 1,000-foot (300-meter) beach. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in summer. Be aware of the strong tides and currents around the rocks. Flags will indicate whether it is safe to swim and surf. Wear a thin wetsuit to endure the cool waters and go surfing to take advantage of the large swell and breakers year-round.

Waves are a little calmer in summer, supporting excellent practice and learning conditions. Watch expert surfers take on the rough ocean in winter. Rent equipment, take courses and get advice from the small surf school on the beach. Consider other water sports, such as kite boarding and windsurfing. Spot occasional scuba divers and bring snorkeling gear to view the fish and rock formations under the water.

Sunbathe on the soft, light yellow sand. Enjoy the seclusion in this tranquil hub, away from crowded facilities.

Walk south along the promontory that juts out from the southern part of Sagres. You will encounter the fascinating 15th-century Sagres Fortress. Learn about its intriguing history and its role in protecting the harbor from invading forces. Admire the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, 200 feet (60 meters) below, and spot Cape St. Vincent and its Beliche Fortress in the distance.

Tonel Beach is a little west of the town of Sagres on Portugal’s southern coast in the Algarve region. Walk west from the central beach area of the town for about 15 minutes to get here. Visit other landmarks in the area, such as the Prainha das Poças, the Nossa Senhora da Graça chapel and the Sagres Fortress.
