Collect pebbles with your kids on this family-friendly beach and take a boat trip to the caves and underwater grottoes of the islets.

Martinhal Beach is a fairly small strand with a shallow bay and calm water, making it an ideal spot for families. It stands opposite the picturesque limestone Martinhal Islets, which you can reach by boat. Bring your kids to swim in the placid ocean and sunbathe on this calm stretch of sand.

Embark on one of the regular boat trips to the Martinhal Islets. Explore the various caves and inlets that pockmark the cliffs and go snorkeling around the islets to check out the fish and underwater terrain. The islands are known for their intriguing underwater grottoes.

Back on Martinhal Beach, climb up and down the sand dunes. Enjoy the excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean and the islets from the tip of the dunes. Snap photos of the verdant cliffs, which are covered in colorful marshland vegetation. Find a spot on the stretch of sand or grassy inland fields to lay down a blanket for a picnic.

Go beachcombing for all manner of pebbles and marine treasures along the sandy strand with your kids. Aside from stones and sand, the beach is basic and remote, a tranquil haven far from the bustle of city life.

Visit the beach for free. It is open to the public at all times. It is flanked by a beach resort with a children’s club, restaurants and swimming pool, among other amenities. Walk through the beach resort to get to the beach. Lifeguards patrol the bay during the summer.

Martinhal Beach is on the eastern flank of the headland that dips into the Atlantic Ocean from the southwestern point of Portugal. Walk east from the heart of Sagres for 20 minutes to reach the beach, which overlooks the Bay of Baleeira. Visit nearby attractions, such as tiny Rebolinhos Beach, the Martinhal Islets and Mareta Beach.
