Tisvildeleje has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, and offers fantastic hiking trails, pristine white sand beaches and the Tisvilde Hegn Forest with its mystical Forest of the Trolls - a pine forest with twisted, unnaturally contorted trees. The trees are up to 200-years-old and, with a little imagination, can bear a striking resemblance to gnarly, old trolls. Your kids will love hearing the legends about the elves and other mystical creatures said to share these woods with the cantankerous trolls.
When you spend your holiday in Tisvildeleje, you're less than an hour's drive from three famous castles built by Danish kings:Fredensborg Palace, Kronborg Castle and Frederiksborg Castle. Fredensborg is the queen's private palace, but the public has access to the royal garden and can even take guided tours which showcase a part of the castle's interior during the summer months. Some of the more impressive places you can visit include the Dome Room and the Garden Room. Kronborg is also known as Elsinore - the castle which provides the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet.According to legend, Holger the Dane sits asleep in the castle's dark cellar, with his enchanted sword in hand, ready to awaken and help defend Denmark in its hour of need. Right next to Kronborg is the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, which tells the captivating tale of the rugged, perilous life on the sea that Danish sailors have led over the centuries. Fredriksborg Castle is located in Hillerod and was built by Christian IV back in the early 17th century. While you're there, be sure to cross the Mint Bridge and visit the lovely Baroque garden, with its cascades and parterre flower beds.
Enjoy an invigorating swim at Helenekilde, the famous spring with mythical healing properties that dates back to the 13th century. Local folk wisdom says if you're sick, you should make a pilgrimage there on Midsummer Night's Eve and collect spring water. Then you're supposed to take it to Helene's grave and lie on it while you drink the water. By the time dawn breaks over the horizon, you'll feel fit as a fiddle.
