Visit The Peak Tram in Central Hong Kong to ride one of the world’s oldest funicular railways, and the earliest form of motorized public transportation in the city. The maroon carriages trundle up and down a hill 1,300 feet (396 meters). It is a heart-in-mouth journey which offers spectacular panoramic views across Hong Kong’s urban landscape and out to sea.
The Peak Tram first started transporting passengers on its near-vertical journey in 1888, and it is today a much-loved piece of history. It is truly an impressive feat of engineering, with the slope a staggering 4 to 27 degrees of incline covering 4,478 feet (1,365 meters) of track. Start at the lower terminus, Garden Road Tram Station and enjoy the 7-minute journey to the Peak Tower Station.
Enjoy the unique optical illusion which occurs as you ride The Peak Tram. When travelling uphill, the high rise buildings on the right hand side of the tram appear to lean towards Victoria Peak Hill (or The Peak as it is more commonly known).
Take time to have a look around the Peak Tram Historical gallery in the Garden Road Tram Station before setting off. There are over 200 tram-related artifacts on display, including a replica of the first generation Peak Tram.
At the summit, The Peak is one of Hong Kong’s best attractions. Soak up the far-reaching views of Victoria Bay from the 360-degree observation deck, before setting off to explore the attractions. You’ll find everything from Madame Tussauds Hong Kong to the Sky Terrace 428 and Madness 3D Adventure, as well as plenty of shopping and dining options.
Ride The Peak Tram daily between 7 a.m. and midnight, and there are trains every 10 to 15 minutes. Buy tickets online in advance or at The Peak Tram terminuses. There are discounts for children and seniors. It’s easy to travel to the Lower Peak Tram terminus by public transportation: the Garden Road Tram Station is located in Wan Chai District and can be accessed on the MRT Island Line or Tsuen Wan Line, or the Star Ferry Pier 8 in Central District.
Visit The Peak Tram official website for more details on tickets, offers and other attractions on the hill.
