For a wild experience combined with magnificent views over Sydney Harbour, this world-renowned zoo is a must-visit.

Taronga Zoo is said to be one of the finest zoos on the planet and with good reason. Set in a vast 74-hectare estate of hilly bushland within the upmarket suburb of Mosman, this zoo is home to some 2500 animals, from 340 different species. The zoo’s location also provides incredible views across Sydney Harbour and beyond.

Start your journey from Circular Quay, an experience in its own right. Take the short crossing over to the Zoo Wharf from which the Sky Safari cable-car will whisk you up through a beautiful scenic backdrop to the top of the hill where Taronga Zoo is located.

You’ll see native Australian animals such as koalas, Tasmanian devils and kangaroos. Visit the zoo’s Nocturnal House, home to many of Australia’s favourite marsupials where you can see platypuses and bilbies.

Taronga Zoo isn’t just for local animals—there are animals here from every corner of the planet. The Indian elephants are among the park’s most popular residents. Watch the elephant show, where you may even see an elephant kicking a football! Be warned though, the ball is kicked at a real pace. There are also aviaries inhabited by some of the world’s most exotic winged creatures. See kites, giant condors and black cockatoos, all vying for attention.

There are lots of shows with keepers giving talks on some of the animals that they look after. The shows are repeated throughout the day, all around the zoo, so you can choose what you see. One highlight is having your photo taken with some of the animals. You can also feed the giraffes, pet baby koalas, or have a hawk or owl perch on your arm. For Sydney’s most adventurous sleepover, join the zoo’s Roar & Snore programme where you get to camp in the zoo overnight in in safari tents, while enjoying a sumptuous feast and up-close encounters with some of the animals.

Taronga Zoo has plenty of amenities on site, with numerous cafés dotted around the park with plenty of choice to suit both adults and children. Taronga Zoo is open every day including public holidays.
