From Broadway shows to African animal enclosures and everything in between, Kansas City's biggest park has activities to suit everyone's taste.

In 1896, local philanthropist Thomas Swope donated a staggering 680 hectares of land to Kansas City, who in turn named the land Swope Park as a thank-you. It has since developed into one of Kansas City's most loved attractions with over 2 million people visiting every year.

Without a doubt what makes Swope Park so popular are the two main attractions: Kansas City Zoo and the Starlight Theatre. Transport yourself to the dry arid climate of Africa with a trip to this zoo, marvel at the exotic creatures that roam the land. Another free option is to take a trip over to the Lakeside Nature Centre, which does sterling work as a rehabilitation centre for local animals. For a great evening’s entertainment, catch a show in one of the three remaining outdoor theatres in America, the Starlight Theatre.

Feeling sluggish and need some exercise? Well Swope Park has kilometres of running and biking trails winding through some beautiful surroundings. Explore the park and you might see a local game of football or baseball being played. If golf is more your thing, then head over to the Swope Memorial Golf Course and practice that swing. If you prefer, there is a more light-hearted Frisbee Golf course available too – definitely a fun way to spend a few hours!

Swope Park is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise busy city. A gentle stroll admiring the parks luscious greenery and fun activities makes for a lovely afternoon. Don't miss out on the Kansas City Community Gardens or the Swope Memorial Fountain. If you have young children with you make sure to catch the Beanstalk Children's garden, which has lots of fun activities for kids. There is a small entry fee but guided tours are free.

The park is situated just south of Kansas City, approximately a 20-minute drive. Entry to the park itself is free however some attractions do charge for admission.
