In 1925, Queen Marie from Romania visited Kansas. To commemorate her trip, the Kansas Music Federation decided to host an outdoor event showcasing local talent. From this performance, it became apparent that a suitable venue was needed for future shows and so after 15 years of proposals, The Starlight Theatre was born.
It may not be as large and intimidating as other outdoor theatre venues but it does have that special something that has people returning again and again. The atmosphere at any of the productions in The Starlight Theatre is second to none and if you're lucky enough to be in the front row you will be right next to the stage.
Some of the shows you might get to see include "Grease", "Mamma Mia", "The Wizard of Oz" and "Chicago". These Broadway shows are all locally produced with top-class performers. The addition of a balmy, starry night enhances the entire performance making it a magical way to spend your evening.
As it is an open-air theatre there is always the risk of rain so it is advised to bring a raincoat. You can bring an umbrella however once seated you are not allowed to put them up so it's best to bring a waterproof jacket instead. Like true performers, if it rains the show still goes on so wrap up well if the weather isn't favourable.
The Starlight Theatre is a 15-minute drive south of Kansas City centre, situated inside Swope Park. Parking incurs a small fee. Shows vary so check the theatre's official website for an up-to-date schedule of what's on. Due to the popularity of the shows it is advised to pre-book your tickets online to avoid disappointment.
