Participate in the planting events and go to the intriguing gardening talks in this active and welcoming set of gardens.

The Sunken Gardens is an elegant park filled with colorful arrays of flowers and plants. Its well-kept gardens showcase more than 30,000 specimens spread across 1.5 acres (0.6 hectares) of scenic terrain. Take photos of the eclectic range of vegetation on display year-round in these pretty grounds.

See picturesque tulips in bloom in spring and inspect the shrubs and trees that withstand Nebraska’s harsh winters. Wander along the paths crisscrossing the park and enter the various sections of these large gardens. Head to the upper level of the north side for the abundance of perennials with colorful blooms or distinctive foliage.

Enjoy the serenity, as you examine the white blossoms of the Healing Garden. Other enchanting parts include the Hamann Rose Garden and the Annual Garden. Join a guided tour with a knowledgeable docent to learn about the range of plants. Attend Garden Gab gatherings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in summer to participate in various gardening activities.

Help with the groundwork of the annual Wake-Up the Beds event in May or get involved in the Put the Beds to Bed winter preparation. Consider renting the park for a private event or business function. It is an idyllic spot for a wedding, reunion or other celebratory gathering.

The park opens daily from early morning until almost midnight. It is free to enter the gardens at all times and the site accepts donations. Restrooms are open from April to October.

The Sunken Gardens is located a little south of the town center of Lincoln. Arrive by taxi or consider driving and leave your car in the parking area just southeast of the Hamann Rose Garden. Go to some of the other landmarks in the district, including the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, Neighbors Park and Woods Park.
