Stroll through the marvelous sculpture garden and admire the contemporary and abstract art in this museum on the university campus.

The Sheldon Museum of Art displays an intriguing collection of artworks from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its building stands out with an impressive modern design and polished and airy interior. Inspect the many artistic pieces from the collections of the Sheldon Art Association and the University of Nebraska in this on-campus site.

Admire the swanky façade of the structure, which was designed by architect Philip Johnson and constructed in 1963. Enter the building and visit the various exhibits to learn about such movements as geometric abstraction, pop art and minimalism. Other collections are on the themes and genres of American modernism, drawings, prints, photography and paintings.

Explore the traveling exhibitions. Previous themes have covered the family, curated photographs, and war and its aftermath. Make your way through the serene sculpture garden and inspect the array of monuments and statues.

Browse the range of items for sale in the Sheldon Museum Store, which has books, stationery and jewelry on display. Attend some of the events and activities put on in the museum, such as the Look! at Lunchtimetalk about a specific work of art on the third Thursday of every month. You can also take a free guided tour, reserved at least two weeks in advance, for a detailed chat with a museum docent.

Visit the museum during daily open hours from morning until late afternoon. It stays open later on Thursdays and Fridays and doesn’t open until noon on Sundays. Admission to the museum is free.

Find the Sheldon Museum of Art in the southwestern part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Main Campus in the heart of Lincoln. Ride a bus to one of the stops along the surrounding streets.
