In northern Spain’s Donostia region, Antiguo is ideally situated for providing practically any kind of vacation you want in one day, although you’ll want to stay much longer than 24 hours. Walk or bike in this neighborhood to enjoy a variety of things to do within proximity of each other.
Antiguo is a section of the popular city San Sebastián, but it has maintained its separate identity by being the oldest area. Ondarreta Beach is separated from buildings and roads by a wide boardwalk and is protected by being almost surrounded with land. Have a dip in the inviting calm water before going on to the next activity.
Exit west of the beach to find a funicular that takes you to the top of the promontory, Monte Igeldo, where there’s a fairground featuring classic rides and fun things to do. Ride the wooden roller coaster that takes you above the ocean with incredible coastal views.
On the descent, pass by the El Peine del Viento that always seems to have a refreshing breeze and playful waves. Be prepared for an over-exuberant wave to break through small holes in the ground and give you a cool soaking. Walk the boardwalk to Miramart tunnel that connects two beaches and gives the appearance of walking under the ocean. Visit it at night for a breathtaking lighting display.
Near Miramart is Miramar Palace that is now a venue for cultural events. Stroll through its magnificent gardens with benches that invite you to sit and admire watery views from the hill.
You are now close to the heart of Antiguo and heading inland will put you on the Calle Matia, which offers a wide range of stores, cafés and restaurants. Try to be there on a Thursday night to sample pintxo-pote: a Basque tradition that includes featured alcoholic drinks and snacks for a very affordable price.
Unlike major centers that have nightlife that joins to the next day, quiet falls over Antiguo to allow for sleep. Get up the next morning and plan another day in this lovely neighborhood that really does seem to have it all.
