Mar del Plata’s huge main square is home to architectural treasures, a children’s play area, public art and a weekend handicraft market.

Appreciate the animated activity of San Martín Square (Plaza San Martín). Spot monuments to Argentine leaders and works of art by well-known national artists. Visit historic buildings, attend performing arts shows and shop at an artisan’s market. San Martín Square covers four city blocks and has four sections intersected by broad thoroughfares. It takes its name from General José de San Martín, a heroic leader during the Latin American wars of independence.

The square’s tree-shaded lawns are ideal for people-watching and finding relief from the hot summer sun. Admire the thick roots of centuries-old trees, tall oaks and pretty araucarias. In the western section is a children’s playground, complete with a carousel, climbing frame, slides and swings.

At the center of the square is a rotary dominated by a bronze monument to General San Martín by the Buenos Aires-born sculptor Luis Perlotti. Look for a recreation of Camille Gaté’s Chiens de Relais and a marble copy of the Fighters of Pergamum by the ancient Greek sculptor Polykleitos. Spot a bust of former president Juan Domingo Perón. Muse over Marta Minujín’s Contemplando la Eternidad, which portrays a man transcending himself to an infinite time.

Take a moment to marvel at the stunning neo-Gothic façade of Mar del Plata Cathedral. Step inside to find images of the 12 apostles, depictions of the Stations of the Cross, intricate stained-glass windows and luxurious altars. Join a guided tour of Colón Theater to hear about its history of over 100 years. Enjoy chamber, jazz and tango music concerts, among other events.

Shop for regional curios at the weekend artisan fair. Discover more handicrafts at the shops on Diagonal de los Artesanos, a market that leads from the square’s western corner. Browse the boutiques, chain stores and fashion outlets on Peatonal San Martín. This pedestrian-only street connects with Bristol Beach.

Public buses stop at San Martín Square and parking is available on the surrounding streets. Mar del Plata Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. Pay a fee for a guided tour in English of the Colón Theater.
