Attend a performance by one of the country’s finest opera companies at Liège’s gorgeous neoclassical theater.

Enjoy an evening of classical music and culture with the Royal Opera of Wallonia, a prestigious opera company that frequently tours around the world. Performances are hosted at the Royal Theater of Liège, a beautiful heritage building that is well worth taking the time to explore.

Opened in 1820, the Royal Theater of Liège was built using materials reclaimed from several of the city’s former churches. The columns on the building’s façade were taken from the Chartreux Convent, while parts of St. Lambert Cathedral were used to construct other areas of the building.

The City of Liège has loaned the theater to the Royal Opera of Wallonia since the company was founded in 1967. It is one of only three major opera houses found in Belgium. The theater underwent major restoration work between 2009 and 2012. Today, you can admire the way modern sound and lighting technology is subtly integrated into the building’s historic architecture.

The Royal Opera of Wallonia is known for attracting a diverse group of top performers from neighboring France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The company’s program typically focuses on classic 19th-century operas, including the work of composers such as Puccini, Massenet and Verdi. You might also see an opera by an 18th-century composer, such as Gluck, Grétry, Galuppi or Cherubini, which are also frequently performed.

The theater regularly hosts films, concerts, non-traditional opera events and conferences. These events are typically free to attend, so be sure to find out what’s going on during your visit.

Take a tour of the theater to learn more about its rich history. The main auditorium is one of Europe’s largest, with a capacity of more than 1,000. Admire the elegant carvings along the box seats and the beautiful frescos that decorate the ceiling.

Operas are typically performed in the evening with occasional afternoon shows. Take a tour organized throughout the year by the Tourist Information Center of the City of Liège.

Find the Royal Opera of Wallona within walking distance of Liège-Guillemins and Gare du Palais stations. The nearby parking lot offers special rates for theater-goers.
