Find a secluded dive spot in the cove protected by this dramatic rocky bluff or walk along cliff-top paths to take in Atlantic coast views.

The rugged headland of Ponta da Oliveira jutting out from Caniço’s coast is a landmark on Madeira, known for its intriguing history, dramatic scenery and magical underwater world. Dive into the crystalline waters around Ponta da Oliveira to explore mysterious caves and spot schools of iridescent fish. Walk along the scenic headland and find the spot that marked a territorial split in Madeira’s early history.

Wander along the walking track that follows Ponta da Oliveira’s ridge. A vertical drop gives way to deep Atlantic Ocean waters. Below you to the east, check out a rocky beach and views that extend along the dramatic cape. The dark boulders of the bluff make a striking contrast with the sapphire-colored ocean. To the west, you can see the launching point of the local dive center.

Visit the dive center and book lessons or a guided trip around Ponta da Oliveira and the Caniço coastline. The dive center’s base is protected by the rocky protrusion of Ponta da Oliveira, providing ideal snorkeling and scuba diving conditions. A dive around the craggy cliffs and secret underwater caves will reveal the mystical marine biodiversity that thrives in the tropical Gulf Stream and vast Atlantic Ocean. Spot monk seals, damselfish, sea stars, spider crabs and anemones in the clear waters around the lava flow rocks.

You can also swim in various coastal swimming pools nearby, which are filled with fresh seawater and provide safe conditions for taking in the beautiful south-coast views. Join a relaxing boat tour or walk along nearby levadas. The Palheiro Gardens and the 18-hole Palheiro Golf Course are within easy reach.

Ponta da Oliveira is located in Caniço on Madeira’s south coast. The bluff is within 15 minutes’ drive from both Madeira Airport in Santa Cruz to the east and Funchal to the west. The best time of year for diving is between July and October.
