Marvel at the fascinating illusionary design of the “Bridge That Doesn’t Meet” and stop in its central bend for views of the river.

The Pedro and Inês Footbridge crosses the Mondego River in the heart of Coimbra. It has a span of 900 feet (275 meters), with an arch design that resembles skipping-stones. Stop at the viewing platform where two walkways meet in the center of the bridge to enjoy the pleasant views of the river and the historic center of the city.

Admire the translucent blue, green, pink and yellow glass slabs that create an elegant pattern on the side rails of the bridge. The structure reflects into the water, generating an intriguing crisscrossing pattern. Cycle along the bike path on this steel bridge and watch people rowing on the river.

Notice how the walkways emerge from each flank of the river and seem not to meet in the middle, due to a twist in the design. This intersection is a perfect location to watch the sunset or occasional fireworks displays. See the bridge at night, when it is illuminated in bright lights.

Visit the Parque do Choupalinho on the western flank of the river. Relax by the side of a canal and cross the small bridge. The park is ideal for a picnic on the scenic patches of grass. Stroll between the trees and sit on one of the benches with a view of the water. The area has a rowing club and a children’s park.

Note that the arch bridge is named after Pedro and Inês, characters from a traditional Portuguese love story. The story involves a forbidden relationship that bore four illegitimate children in the 14th century. The structure itself was completed in 2006.

Find the Pedro and Inês Footbridge on the Mondego River in the center of Coimbra. Walk south from the Coimbra Railway Station for 15 minutes to get to the bridge. See other attractions in the area, such as Portugal dos Pequenitos, the Biblioteca Joanina and the Mosteiro de Santa Clara.
