Dating back more than seven centuries, Coimbra University is the historic highlight of the city’s town center. Its 16th-century campus contains some of the most intriguing landmarks in the region, including a tower, a chapel and a palace. Arrive at the 18th-century Via Latina colonnade of Mannerist design at the heart of the university. See the Ceremonial Hall and gaze up at the University Tower, whose clock and four bells continue to keep students organized and punctual. Climb the 180 steps to reach its viewing tower to look out over the historic center of Coimbra.

Step inside the S. Miguel Chapel and notice its large windows and ceiling painting. See the Baroque architecture of the Royal Palace, which became part of the campus in 1544.

Visit spectacular Biblioteca Joanina, which dates back to the early 1700s. Climb its parallel outdoor stairs and admire the Baroque features of the library’s façade. The structure contains hundreds of thousands of books protected by the stable environment and appropriate humidity levels within the library. Take a guided tour to gaze up at the ceiling paintings and learn about the former prison held in this ornate structure.

Find Coimbra University close to the eastern bank of the Mondego River in the southern portion of the city’s Old Town area. Ride the train to the city’s main railway station and walk east for 10 to 15 minutes. See other landmarks in the area, including the Santa Cruz Church and Coimbra Town Hall.
