"This Ryokan Style Hotel was an amazing surprise to our journey through Japan! The hotel is very well maintained with super amazing mountain and river views, and their Onsen are top notch with super high quality amenities! "Just a tip for those like us who are new to "no-receptionist check-in" stay-in/hotel/motel, make sure to check your email for the Room Number and Security Code. We got our "room information" via email, sent two days before the start of our stay. I highly suggest to arrive at location and check-in as early as allowed to give ample time to rectify any issues, and to pre-register/check-in. "Charming ryokan. Onsen on top floor has separate bathing for men and women, lovely way to begin and end the day. The rooms come with half board, so a very special dinner and breakfast filled with Japanese delicacies. Location is convenient, it’s about a 15 minute walk from the tobu Nikko station but you can take the number 1 bus that leaves you a block or so away. Quite convenient to the attractions. Lovely mountainous view with brook from the window."

"Mr. Ban runs a great guesthouse. If you're not vegetarian, get full board. It's a bit hard to find. Directions: Take bus from stop 1A at Nikko Train Station. Get off at stop 13. Walk up hill past Saitoh Dental Clinic. Walk to end of high stone wall on right. Continue past grassy area on right. A 2nd stone wall begins. Take right at first opening and bear right. Gasthof Ami is the big house at the far end. "

"Small, very good affordable option along the river within walking distance of the main shrine sites and immediately adjacent to the trail to the Kanmangafuchi Abyss. Seems to be routinely booked by hiking tour groups, at least the two night we spent there. The hotel showed no availability on their website, but I was able to book a room on Expedia."

"This is our second stay at this hotel. It has fantastic onsens, great Japanese buffet, and the rooms are large and comfortable. Kinu-Tateiwa Otsuribashi, a famous suspension bridge, is right behind the hotel that leads to great sceneries. Hotel is approximately 12 min walk to Kinugawaonsen Station, and offers shuttle bus in the morning to the station by request. Next time we visit Nikko, we definitely go to this hotel again! "

"I took my brother to Japan, and I wanted him to experience a traditional "ryokan", and even though the IROHA Hotel has "hotel" in the name, it is very much a ryokan with tatami floors in the rooms, shoji and fusuma doors, and you sleep on futons. There is a communal bath in the hotel in addition to the "unit baths" (with commode, sink, and shower/bath) in the rooms. They serve a traditional Japanese breakfast with rice, miso soup, pickles, grilled fish, simmered soybeans and hijiki (seaweed), shredded cabbage, with an egg and some bacon- very much the gohan (rice) okazu (variety of different foods). The IROHA is right across the street from Nikko Toshogu, one of the big tourist destinations in Nikko so the location is great. The big drawback of the IROHA is its age. It looks like it was built in the 1970's and has not been updated since then. It is very clean but old- faded carpet, dated wall coverings. This is likely why it is fairly inexpensive relative to other properties around it. A big highlight of check-in was the woman at reception. She wore a very attractive kimono, which I complimented, and she let me know her mother made it, which was also impressive. If you can get past the age of the hotel, it is possible to get a glimpse of traditional Japan, which is well worth it in my opinion. (Note also we had a minor medical emergency while staying at the IROHA, and they jumped into action to help.)"

"We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Ootaki and would definitely return. The hotel is very traditional and gives you a real insight into traditional Japanese culture. Although the staff had limited English, this was not a problem for us and they were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The hotel has lots of freebies as part of their service including combs, hairbrushes, shower caps, razors etc. The onsen was very relaxing and the hotel was clean. "
