Look for the impressive Dragon Fountain in this square and you’ll know you’re in the center of Klagenfurt where you can see some of the city’s most notable buildings.

New Square, or Neuer Platz, is a vast rectangular, tree-lined square in the heart of Klagenfurt. In the middle, standing proudly and unmistakably, is the enormous Dragon Fountain. Visit the square to appreciate the grand architecture, to people-watch and to feel a sense of the city’s pride.

The first thing you will notice on entering New Square is the Dragon Fountain, or Lindwurm, as it is also known. Legend has it that Klagenfurt was built on a swamp inhabited by a dragon. This dragon has long been the heraldic emblem of the city and is even featured in its coat of arms. Get closer to the fountain to admire its shade and form it has been carved from a single block of schist, a stone with a noticeable green hue. The fountain was carved in 1593 the sculptor’s identity is still not confirmed. Also of note is the statue of Hercules and the gushing fountain, which were added to the piece in 1636.

New Square was redesigned in 2008 according to plans crafted by renowned architect Boris Podrecca, which gave it an undoubtedly modern feel. Look around the edges of the square to find evidence of the area’s past in the surrounding buildings. Each building has a unique history, from the small shops adorned in Rococo stuccowork to the grand Town Hall.

The palatial Town Hall stands on the edge of New Square. This Renaissance building owes its origins to the Counts of Rosenberg of 1650. It has served as Klagenfurt’s town hall since 1918. Stand on the grand double flight of entrance stairs to enjoy a sweeping panorama of the square.

While the Dragon Fountain is the most famous landmark in New Square, it’s not the only landmark. Look for the monument to Maria Theresa, one of the most successful Habsburg rulers.

New Square is located in the heart of the city and easily accessible by public transportation. The attractive city center is best explored on foot so leave the car on the outskirts of town. To travel around town, make use of buses and trains.
