Stand in the middle of the oldest part of downtown Klagenfurt and admire the 16th-century mansions that line its sides.

The Old Square, or Alter Platz, is the oldest part of downtown Klagenfurt and makes for a picturesque place to take photos. Wander along the long public square and admire the grand historic buildings that line its sides before pulling up a seat at one of the outdoor cafés and enjoying some Austrian pastries while watching locals go about their day.

One of Klagenfurt’s most charming landmarks, the Old Square should be a must-see on your visit. All around the square are 16th-century mansions with Baroque facades and Renaissance courtyards. The oldest chronicled building in all of Klagenfurt is on the Old Square: number 31 Alter Platz, dating to 1489. Take a photo outside this building, known as Zur Goldenen Gans, or the House of the Golden Goose, so-named for the regal goose perched above the pillared entranceway. Venture into the inner courtyard of the house to see a relief featuring a centaur and woman.

The Old Town Hall is an impressive building too. The former Palais Welzer served as the town hall until 1918. Admire the Rosenberg crest above the Renaissance doorway as well as the three-tiered arcaded courtyard. Also of note is the fresco of Justice, located next to the coats of arms of Klagenfurt and Carinthia.

In the middle of the square is the unmistakable Column of the Trinity, or Plague Column as it is also known. Towering spire-like into the sky, the column is a major feature on the square’s landscape. It was originally made of wood and erected on Heiligengeistplatz but was moved to the Old Square in 1965. Enjoy perusing the shops, bars and cafés that surround the Column of the Trinity, or take the children to the nearby playground to burn off some energy.

The Old Square stands in the middle of Klagenfurt and is therefore easily reached by bus, train and on foot. It is possible to drive to this part of the city, but it is easier to soak up the atmosphere by simply ambling along the narrow lanes that radiate out from the square.
