The futuristic-looking observation deck and sky-high restaurant make this landmark bridge more than just a way to cross the Danube.

With its leaning tower topped by a spaceship-shaped observation deck, the New Bridge (Novy Most) is one of Bratislava’s most distinctive landmarks. Ride the high-speed elevator to the top of the tower for fantastic views of the city and to dine in the restaurant.

The bridge was constructed between 1967 and 1972 and spans the Danube River for approximately 1,400 feet (426.7 meters). It can be crossed by road or on foot.

Head up to the observation deck, which is at a height of 312 feet (95 meters) above the ground. The ride in the elevator takes 45 seconds. Use the complimentary telescope to make the most of the views.

Look north and try and spot some of the city’s most famous landmarks, such as Bratislava Castle. The green copper spire of St. Martin’s Cathedral is also clearly visible. Extend your gaze far out to the distance toward the Carpathian Mountains, which lie beyond the city limits. During the years of communist rule, the deck was closed, out of fear that people might see capitalist Austria from this elevated position.

Order lunch or dinner in the restaurant. It is called UFO after the distinctive shape of the tower.

During the summer, the beach under the UFO is a wonderful place to relax. Sunbathe on this stretch of embankment by the Danube, and on the weekends, stay late for the beach parties. Music is provided by a lineup of DJs.

To get to Novy Most, take the bus or tram to the Novy Most stop. The tower is open daily until late and there is an admission charge. Children who are less than 43.7 inches (111 centimeters) in height enter for free. The bridge leads to Bratislava’s old town, exiting onto Hviezdoslavovo Square. After checking out the sights from the bridge, walk through the square and explore the surrounding art galleries and theaters.
