This historic tower guides sailors through the waters of the Caribbean on the westernmost cape of Jamaica.

The small town of Negril on the westernmost tip of Jamaica is a popular resort town surrounded by cliffs and natural wetlands and its picturesque old lighthouse is the most prominent and oft-visited of the town's landmarks.

Located in a grassy parkland with water lapping against its base, the historic signalling tower is the highest structure in the parish and draws thousands of visitors every year. Originally built in 1894 by French settlers, the lighthouse contains a glass prism made in Paris and constructed to guide sailboats and ships past the promontory on the island's western tip.

When the lighthouse keeper is there, you can take a fascinating tour for the price of a small donation to the tower's upkeep. The views from the top and the historical artefacts that are to be found inside make it a worthwhile investment. Climb the 103 steps to discover the old lighting equipment, documents and keepsakes from days gone by. Your guide will recount dramatic stories from the history of the surrounding seas and the lighthouse's role in local history.

After the tour, step outside to take in the fantastic panoramic views stretching off to the horizon from your 20-metre perch. Sunset is the most popular time for photographers to capture the perfect snap of the cape as the warm colours transform the sky.

Once you've come back to earth, the rock pools near the base of the tower are popular spots for swimmers and snorkellers, but be aware that the tides can be quite strong. If you fancy a coffee or even a cocktail during your visit, head to the nearby cliff café, where locals and tourists mingle after the sun has set.

The lighthouse in Negril has varied opening hours depending on the season and the keeper's schedule it's best to call ahead to make sure it's open during your visit. The lighthouse is located within easy walking distance of the town centre, or you can take a taxi along the unpaved road leading up to it.
